Cambridge Who's Who Names George S. Mumford Professional of the Year in Astronomy
Dr. Mumford taught astronomy and astrophysics at Tufts University for nearly four decades
WESTWOOD, MA, November 10, 2011 /Aerospace - Aviation PR News/ -- George S. Mumford, Professor of Astronomy Emeritus of Tufts University, has been named a Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Astronomy. While inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Cambridge Who's Who membership.
Dr. Mumford spent nearly four decades of his career at Tufts University, teaching astronomy and astrophysics on the elementary and intermediate levels. He was also the dean of both the liberal arts and graduate programs for some time. Throughout his career, he cultivated his expertise in nova-like variable stars, better known as explosive stars. Dr. Mumford developed an interest in astronomy at an early age and chose the field of education because it gave him the opportunity to teach and conduct research in his field. He attributes his success to his passion for the subject and the endless research opportunities he encountered.
In 1950, Dr. Mumford graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in astronomy. He went on to earn a master's degree in astronomy from the University of Indiana and a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Virginia. Now retired, he retains affiliation with the American Astronomical Society and the American Physical Society. Dr. Mumford enjoys writing movie reviews for Foxhill Village's in-house publication. He also plans to publish a book on 100 years of salmon fishing on the Miramichi River in New Brunswick, Canada.
